Total Tracking Laser
Unlike radar signals, which are highly reflective, laser signals have very poor reflective characteristics. Many of today's laser detectors do not have the high sensitivity necessary to detect laser within a large "field of view." The Vector 955 incorporates Beltronics' best laser detection, which uses twin laser ports to detect energy far outside the main laser beam--including off-axis signals--providing a 360-degree field of view. How Safety Radar Works

I recently bought this detector and I fell in love with it. It is definitely worth your money if you are looking to get a nice radar detector without making your wallet too thin. It seems to be at the cut off right before your get into the GPS etc. Personally I don't need that. It was one of the best investments I made over the summer. If you are looking for a solid performing detector that you can rely on, this is the best "bang for your buck." It has saved me multiple times.

This is my first radar dector. While it works well I'm not in love with the product.
I've opted to use this as an aid for beyond visual range help. It does so reasonably well. In situations where there is a speed trap, IE cop stopped with radar gun it's probably 50/50 effective. In a situation where the cop is moving, or better yet coming directly towards you on a two lane freeway I would drop this down to 20/80 in favor of the cop. Due to the limit of it's range which is about 1/4 of a mile at best. At 70mph, or a combined 140mph this is a few seconds at best.
In the city, you need to turn off X brand but most every large department store is going to get you false K band alerts. Training you to ignore the radar detector - not a good thing.
My use of this will remain for long road trips where we're covering great amounts of ground in areas I'm not familiar with. I would suggest this unit is only good for this type of use and your behavior should be as follows. If you're traveling above the limit, on a rural highway and get any alarm, get down to the speed limit quickly and safely. ID the issue and determine real or false.
On a recent road trip of over 1200 miles in a few days, this provided the best protection. Was a little cumbersome, but getting a ticket for 10 over is a waste of tax payer dollars and I cannot support a system that is designed to tax the driver and not go after real criminals. Speeding tickets have become the new tax grab, and my family's recent ticket where we were singled out for out of state plates while not actually speeding at the claimed rate is proof positive for me and why we bought this. We're safe drivers with not a ticket between us in 25 years of driving.
Short story on this, while driving in a remote area a faster car pasted us and we were pulled over for that cars speed. They had local plates so it is our thinking that cop figured we cannot or will not fight the ticket. However the speed we were pulled over for, what they got on the radar, was not the speed we were traveling, nor what they wrote us up for. Making it seem like the cop did us a favor when in fact we weren't traveling the 18 over the limit as suggested.
This radar detector is about the cost of one 10 over ticket and likely reasonable priced of the protection it offers. Units much more expensive only double the effective range of detection is this is the best unit in it's price point.

I wanted a good radar detector with all the features to replace my broken Cobra one. After reading many reviews on this V955, I decided to try it since it appeared to have more features that the old Cobra. I am quite pleased with this V955 with the exception of a few annoying things:
First and foremost, it overreacts on every K band it senses in the city. I live near a city which uses many of those frequent bands like K and X bands for front doors, etc. and it gets very frustrating that the V955 keeps on going off with these "false alarms." Of course, if it is a frequent path you drive, you'll memorize exactly where it always goes off, but that doesn't help the problem because it goes off for a few seconds and then completely silent a few seconds, then back on with the K band and then off on standby silent again, which means that it's automatic mute feature won't work on it since it's not a solid signal being picked up (and I wasn't even moving)! The manual says you can switch it to city mode or city mode with low x, which I did not notice a change with the x band, and it did absolutely nothing for the worst offending K band! I finally have to hit the mute button (which will only mute it for a short period of time). If I happen to be on my cell phone's bluetooth, everyone on the other end says they cannot hear me over the beeping. Grrr. Mute, Mute, Mute until I'm past that area.
Secondly, it doesn't have the ignition sound match where it raises or lowers the alarms based upon how much noise your engine is making in whatever gear you're in... that was handy when you come to a stop and everything quiets, but it's not mandatory to have that feature - I just wish it did.
Overall, I'm still very glad that I bought this V955 and it operates very well and has helped a bunch! However, I'm still getting frustrated with the K and X bands, but it's just something I'll have to deal with until it's time for a new radar detector again, which is why I didn't give it a 5 star rating!
